Rediscover Sedaris

When I took this book off of the shelves in Barns&Noble, it wasnt becuz of Sedaris, I had no clue about him nor his writing whatsoever, I did because the cover design. As a graphic designer, I find myself buying books (or about anything) way too often based on whether or not the covers look good. Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I waste money.
I read this book two thirds of the way through and decided that it was a waste of money. It was simply too mellow and too slow for me to even breathe. Now, I normally try hard to finish a book before starting another one, if I had to stop in the middle, it’s pretty bad.
After this book was forgotten for almost a year, I one day over my oatmeal at breakfast started reading a random paragraph in a recently issue of the New Yorker, ..very charming writing, I made a note to come back to it the next morning, um.. witty, I finally was curious enough to start the article from the beginning and found out it was Sedaris. (This Old House by David Sedaris, the New Yorker July 9 & 16 2007, p42-47). Turn out, his writing is like old wine, if you gulp it down like beer it gets a little dry, the only way to enjoy its flavor to the fullest is to savor one glass at a time. So I dug it out and savored the rest of it.

Done Reading

Let’s face it, truth is funny. “I don’t know why I lie but I just do it without thinking. It’s a thing I got from my mom.” - Christina Smith. Damn funny if you have a mother like ours. The book of Dave Eggers is full of those moments, consciousness piercing through consciousness. If you laugh cuz you recognize yourself in his story, you’re smart (staggering genius if you like), if you don’t, you’re lucky.

Rabbits

No matter how the world has changed for the humans, it is still primitive for wild animals like rabbits. They worry about living eating and breeding, instead of money, losing weight, or iphones. They are very much depended on their intuition like their ancestors from the beginning. But we, the humans, have gotten a lot more complicated, gained a lot of smarts, lost some wisdom. Albert Einstein said “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” If I should only learn one thing from the book Watership Down it is to stay in touch with my intuition as a living being.

The Catcher in the Rye

This is the book of the moment. Holden is not your typical teenage boy, he’s very sure of his feelings. And I wonder how people get to be that way, cuz it’s very hard to find. Or at least it was a struggle for me.

Finished on Saturday, June 23. It flows, as if they were your own thoughts instead of words that you read in a book. Though I know every single thought of Holden’s is probably well thought out and structured by the author, by still it all comes so naturally it flows. The emotions are just right too.

The Namesake is a good movie, worth seeing.

finally finished this book called Say Uncle by Eric Shaw Quinn. bought it at a yard sale in west hollywood for two bucks, later found out that it’s autographed by the author. the book itself is ..okay. there’s very little conflicts and no hardship in the story, doesn’t seem real. like most fictions, it’s too ideal to learn anything from ..offers no real emotions/struggles that touch your heart. dialog is good, somewhat clever, some chapters are obviously trying to create a situation comedy scene where everybody falls on top of each other with cake on the face, but there’s a reason why tv does better job at it ..some stuff is only funny when it’s visual. mr Quinn is probably better off writing sit-com scripts.

I ran 2.75miles at 5mph today.

Recently I started reading my History of Graphic Design text book from college. Art history in general fascinates me, but not art history classes. I remember sitting in the back of the lecture hall in this class tracing random type faces from this book instead of paying attention, while of course my far more talented classmates doodling the cartoon portraits of the professor. What I got out of that class was a letter grade “B” and the thought of “maybe I will read this book someday” and that someday had finally arrived.

Saw an old typewriter today when I past by this art gallery, just thought that it’s just impossible to have 'writer’s block' if you just use an old typewriter instead of a computer - it would be so much fun typing on that thing you wouldn’t wanna stop! And even better you can use the lack of back space key as an excuse to roll perfectly good paper into balls and practice 3 pointers with your trash can.
